If Coco Bodu Hithi offers the ultimate luxurious getaway, then Coco Palm is where you go to truly experience the native Maldivian way of living.
Coco Palm is the Coco Collection’s first property and is situated on Baa Atoll, the most famous part of the Maldives where many big hotel groups have built their resorts. In order to get here, a seaplane is the way to go. Coco Palm has its own comfortable lounge for guests taking the seaplane from Male, which only takes 20 minutes. There’s nothing fancy about the plane – the pilots actually fly barefoot! – but the journey itself, where you get to witness those picture-perfect bird’s eye views of the Maldives, is pretty unmissable.
There are no TVs in Coco Palm, and WiFi is only available at reception. The GM told me that there will be WiFi coverage throughout the whole property in the next six months but for now, you’ll need to get a local WiFi sim card if you require Internet access during your vacation at the Palm. Everything at this resort is simple and very eco-friendly; although there are complimentary bottles of water supplied every day, only bio-disposable and reusable glass bottles are used.
The waters around the Palm are much choppier than those around Bodu Hithi, so I wouldn’t recommend doing water sports like water skiing there. In addition, the house reef is not as beautiful as Bodu Hithi’s due to the strong current – but there are more creatures to see on this island. Whilst dolphin watching and manta ray snorkelling are not available at Coco Bodu Hithi, both are regular activities at the Palm.
There are also resident sea hens on the island, which I did not come across at Bodu Hithi, plus plenty of green sea turtles that come regularly to lay eggs on the beach – I happened to witness the birth of one of four hatchlings! The baby turtles are collected so that staff can quickly record their numbers, before being released back into the wild within 24 hours. In order to maximize their survival rate, the baby turtles are encouraged to crawl back to the sea themselves so that they remember where they were born… and so they know where to come back! They are then collect again and then released back into the depths of the sea. It was so magical to witness the birth of so many green sea turtles, but it was also sad to learn that only 1 out of 1000 green sea turtles make it to adulthood.
Nature lovers will love the Palm as there are no buggies for transport – everyone walks. However, foodies might not be so keen, since there are only two restaurants and two bars on the whole island… oh well, you shouldn’t be too greedy after all! Besides that, the Palm offers almost everything Bodu Hithi does. So now can you can decide if you are more of a Bodu Hithi guest or a Palm one?
