My friend shared the video below on Facebook the other day, and tagged me (Yes, I get tagged almost everyday on Facebook). So I had to watch it… to be able to give comments and prove that I watched it. LOL!
It certainly isn’t the type of panda I am used to seeing… but people seem to be drawn to anything that is related to pandas. Hence, the whooping 22+ million views on Youtube.
Nonetheless, most people like myself still prefer to watch the type of cute panda in the video below!
Isn’t the baby panda just so adorable?! (This video has over 153 million views and it’s only 17 seconds long.)
Now, those videos might not be the best way to introduce WWF but since I now have your attention (hopefully!), I want to share my recent visit to the WWF Hong Kong Visitor Centre with you… Plus, you’ll get the chance to win something after reading this article too! 🙂
I am very fond of the giant panda (and all animals) because I was taught at a very young age (when I was still in school in Shanghai) that China’s national animal is the giant panda, and also very sadly, that the giant panda is an endangered species.
So when I got to the age where I could apply for volunteering jobs, the first one I applied for was the WWF. Yes, I’m sure you can guess the simple reason behind this – I saw the panda logo and I wanted to help.
In the end, I never got the chance to work as a volunteer for WWF, but I kept track of the great work they do – not just helping pandas, but wild animals in general. That’s why I am thrilled to have this chance to help them in a different way this time, which also benefits YOU, my lovely readers! So read carefully…
On a winter’s day in Hong Kong, I started my journey to the WWF Visitor Centre in Central following the instructions on the map on my iPhone.
You could spot the Hong Kong WWF Visitor Centre on the way to taking the Peak Tram from Central. It’s very easy to get to, but also very easy to miss!
You should walk towards the Peak Tram stop on Garden Road but when you reach it, keep walking deeper to the bus station behind the tram station. Its full address is 1 Tramway Path, Central, Hong Kong.
There are many cool products in the Visitor Centre, and most of them are made from recycled materials and resources.
Here are a few fun examples (refer to photos above):
Yoyos – made from eggshell.
Pens – made from used teabags, unwanted coffee beans, thrown away apple cores etc.
Candles – made from natural soy wax.
Handbags – made from unwanted newspapers and magazines (Sorry, I forgot to take a photo of those but I found a similar handwoven recycled bag online for you; see next photo. The bags are not made by WWF but a eco fashion designer WWF supports.).
And WWF will even plant a tree for you in Lombok island, Indonesia; if you buy a Baby Tree – a tiny plant that you can grow and strap to your mobile phone. More amazingly is that you can check how your tree (the tree WWF planted for you) is doing anytime using Google Earth (Your tree’s location will be provided by WWF with a Google Earth link.)!
Needless to say, every purchase you make there helps to fund the WWF so you are helping the protection and conservation of many wild animals all over the world – including the giant panda, of course!
So why not start the new year with some love for the animals that need our help?!
